What you see will be what you get

Boston-based surgical simulation company Axis Three this weekend unveiled a new 3-D software tool that allows people who are about to have facial surgery to see what they’ll look like when the bandages come off. Axis Three’s system is the newest technology development from the company that rolled out a three-dimensional breast-imaging product about two years ago. With that system, developed using image-capture technology developed by Siemens, women can rely on their own photo-realistic image to try on different implants before undergoing surgery.

The result is a markedly better patient experience, said Alicia Recupero, Axis Three’s vice president of marketing. “Portrait 3D, when combined with a surgeon’s experience, leads to a happier, more confident patient,” Recupero said.

The company’s new 3-D system uses the same physics-based technology to forecast the outcome of certain facial surgeries, such as a nose job or cheek implants.

Axis Three introduced its face simulation module in Seattle at Plastic Surgery 2009, an annual industry gathering.

The face-only camera and simulation software package costs about $30,000, but surgeons who already use the company’s breast-imaging product may add the face module to their system for $10,000.

Axis Three’s next product, Recupero said, will simulate the outcome of additional invasive and noninvasive face and body procedures.

Axis Three, led by CEO Steve Crummey, was founded in 2002 and has its roots in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Crummey was hired in June when the company’s Boston headquarters opened. Axis Three also has offices in Los Angeles, New York City and Dallas.
